High-flying Crystal Palace pushed league leaders Manchester City all the way on Saturday, with teenage sub Kelechi Iheanacho providing the match-winning goal for the Citizens late on.

The first-half provided little in the way of quality, with  Sergio Agüero forced off early after a dreadful challenge from Scott Dann, which arguably merited more than the yellow brandished by ref Mike Jones.

£55million summer signing Kevin De Bruyne replaced the injured Aguero, with the Belgian schemer making his debut for City.

In a scrappy game, Yaya Toure then found himself in the referee’s book after another poor challenge on James McArthur.

That challenge led to a touchline fracas between Maneul Pellegrini and Alan Pardew, two men with a bit of history between them.

After the break, the quality improved, although Jesus Navas really should’ve made it 1-0 after rounding Palace ‘keeper Alex McCarthy.

The hosts were always a threat going forward, with Jason Puncheon forcing a good save from Joe Hart before Dwight Gayle almost scored from a Wilfried Zaha centre.

Soon after that miss from Gayle, 18-year-old Nigerian Iheanacho, fired home an 89th minute equaliser after a Samir Nasri shot had been parried.

The win sees the Citizens make it five wins in their first five league games for the first time since 1912, although the injury to Aguero added to question marks over Raheem Sterling and David Silva (neither played), is hardly the best preparation for City’s midweek Champions League clash with Juventus. As for the Eagles, they drop to fourth despite another impressive display.

  1. Chris says:

Scott Dann challenge was strong and warranted the yellow.
Please note the Fernadinho scythed Puncheon from behind for a solid RED offence – not even noted here.
Toure’s tackle was way worse and got a yellow. the ref again a strong yellow but not a red card some weaker ref’s would have given.
Joe Hart was on excellent form. not noted here. I’m not whinging about losing. but Man City weren’t the only team hard done by here…
Best technical performance by Palace for many a year….
