You may not have been aware at the time, but last night saw one of the most significant, depressing sporting images of our time was captured during Man City’s slim second-leg victory over PSG.

While Sergio Aguero conspired to fluff his first-half penalty, behind the goal a sea of camera-toting City fans, who had presumably paid an awful lot of money for their seats, decided to watch the action unfold through their phones instead…

To be fair, those six seconds of terrible, trembling, low-res, poor quality footage are going to make for some priceless memories in years to come.

*Sigh*

They were not watching the game on their phones, they were taking pictures of the penalty, you idiot Marc Duffy. Shows how you keep up with the times.

All of modern day football’s ills? What does that photo describe of corrupt governing bodies, feckless owners, over paid prima donnas, match fixing, sponsorship deals, maniacal agents etc. ?
Perhaps one could add rife hyperbole to the above list too….

@John – I sincerely hope that your comment is tongue-in-cheek.

What’s the point though? It’s disturbing really.

I love this blog but a huge amount of the content you post is the footage people get on their phones. That said, I see your point

Whilst I think personally it’s better to watch the penalty without the phone and soak up the full atmosphere of the event, times are changing and some people maybe feel it’s worth losing the edge on the present goings on to get their phone and save the memory for the rest of their life. Imagine if your parents and grandparents had videos to accompany the great games they went to back in the day. I’m not saying it’s what I would’ve done but if that had gone in and sent them on their way to the semi, those people could show that video for years to come and relive the moment – some may argue that they never lived the moment in the first place though as they were too busy recording it.

There is also an argument that you could watch the pen as well as videoing it, if you can aim it well enough without having to look at the screen – definitely overthinking this now.

It was nice though that the photograph in the article was in the only part of the Etihad where there were no empty seats. Obviously those tickets that were being advertised on general sale on TalkSport up to three hours before kick-off were all snapped up…
