After winning the first leg by a single goal, Man City inflicted a merciless beating on Schalke in the second to go striding into the Champions League quarter-finals for the third time in four seasons.

Once City got up to speed, their German opponents had precious little chance of matching them as the goal spree began in the 35th minute and carried on unhindered until the 84th.

Sergio Aguero notched the first with a rinky-dinky penalty before wasting no time snuffling a second just three minutes later.

Leroy Sane then scored against his former club (protocol sticklers will be glad to learn he restricted his celebrations to a respectful minimum) before Raheem Sterling put City four up shortly thereafter.

While it may have taken an absolute ponderous age for VAR to verify the strike, it gave us all watching at home the chance to re-watch Sane’s sumptuous assist a couple more times…

With the possession stat almost in three figures, Bernardo Silva then rattled off goal number five for City in 71st minute by applying a first-time finish to yet another Sane cross.

Phil Foden came off the bench to score the sixth, showing the kind of composure that belies his tender years to collect another inch-perfect through-ball from Sane, tiptoe around Schalke ‘keeper Ralf Fahrmann and cut the ball back into an empty net…

Gabriel Jesus, another second-half substitute, then railed the seventh and final nail into Schalke’s Champions League coffin with a laser-cut finish from the edge of the box…

Misery: compounded. For those struggling to keep track, that’s Man City 10-2 Schalke on aggregate.

Fairly comprehensive, we’d say.
