Liverpool 2-1 Manchester United – FA Cup – January 28th

With Ryan Giggs and Paul Scholes going head to head with Steven Gerrard and Jamie Carragher, we could’ve been back in 2000, although the constant booing of Patrice Evra by the Anfield faithful belonged farther back in the dark ages. This fixture is innately incendiary, however for the Liverpool crowd to boo the Manchester United captain simply for being the victim of racism was utterly contemptuous.

Still, away from the controvery off the field, the game, from the off, highlighted David De Gea’s vulnerability in the United goal, with Andy Carroll and Martin Kelly crowding around the Spaniard whenever the Reds had a corner. Ultimately, this ploy would produce the goods for Kenny Dalglish’s men, when, on 21 minutes, Daniel Agger headed home after De Gea was caught in no-man’s land.

With half-time approaching, however, the visitors were back on level terms, when Antonio Valencia outfoxed Jose Enrique to set up Park Ji-Sung. The South Koren lashed home to make it 1-1 at the break.

United pushed for the winner, and were in control for much of the second-half, but with Danny Welbeck struggling up front, they couldn’t make their dominance count. With 18 minutes to go, Steven Gerrard was replaced by the in-form Craig Bellamy, and not for the first time, a Liverpool side without the sometimes domineering influence of their captain, started to find their rhythm again. And with just two minutes of normal time left, another sub, Dirk Kuyt, lost his marker Evra to fire home past De Gea and knock the Red Devils out of the cup.

Fair dues to the much-maligned Andy Carroll too, who worked hard in an extremely isolated role up front, before providing the assist for Kuyt’s winner. He almost scored himself at the death, only to see his close-range header come back off the woodwork.

With both Manchester clubs now out of both domestic cups, one of them will finish the season trophyless, unless they take the Europa League seriously. As for Liverpool, is this the beginning of a return to the good times at Anfield?

Lfc fans didnt boo Welbeck! So is it only booing Evra that is racist?

  2. Nevermind says:

They weren’t booing him for being the victim of racism, they were booing him for making the whole thing up.

Anyone who looks into this matter in detail can see for themselves that it’s all a big misunderstanding.

  3. Anonymous says:

How is LFC booing Evra racism? Everyone knows that it was all a stupid misunderstanding and it was because of Evra that LFC lost their star player for 8 games. If LFC were racist, they’d have booed Welbeck too.

The reason Evra got booed was not because he’s black but he’s a cunt.

A bit more on getting your facts right would be nice..

  10. Conor says:

Suarez admitted to calling Evra a ‘negro’. We have been over this blind LFC fans, you’re not allowed to do that. It is racist. When will this ever get through to ye?

  11. JJ says:

For all of your excuses for United losing, the real reason they lost was because Evra was horrible defending that Liverpool clearance that resulted in the winning goal.

  12. JJ says:

United dominated the the second half? Did they even have a shot on goal in the second half?

  13. noiz says:

dominating means they had possession, a staggering 57%, mostly in their own half..

  16. so wut do you think about the deafet

  17. Del says:

United weren’t creative enough when it came to goal scoring oppertunities, should’ve subbed Chicharito on earlier, prolly at the start of second half.

As for Liverpool, made it difficult for De Gea by putting a tall lad like Carrol on him, by the time he’d got himself free of Carrol he barely had enough time to react to Agger’s header.

I think it’s a BIG ask to expect De Gea to do the job Van der Sar did for United, coming from a mid table club like Atletico, he needs time and games to build up his confidence.
This constant threat of having Lindegaard on his back isn’t helping his self confidence at all. I think United should load one of them out to help them both develop as goalkeepers. ;-)

  18. Del says:

    *loan one of them out
    Stupid typo.

  19. Riley says:

They didn’t boo Evra because he was the victim of racist abuse. They booed him because he’s an utter cunt. We’re not racist, we only hate mancs.

  20. CJ says:

to the idiot that runs this website how about showing the same level of scrutiny toward terry that you obviously have no concern doing with suarez. both players were involved in racist remarks toward opposition players yet you seem to think its ok for ferdinand to just “shake hands and forget it” but evra shouldnt. when will you stop targeting foreign players and report some unbiassed news on BOTH issues. im not saying suarez is innocent itd just be nice for both players to recieve equal and fair coverage!!! maybe get your head out your arse (or JT’s for that matter) for the next article.

  21. Tinez says:

Atletico aren’t mid table, they are top 6 verging on top 4. He made a ridiculous number of stunning saves in Spain, including a sublime performance in a 2-1 loss to Barca.

  22. Francis R says:

evra got the boo’s and rightly so, Suarez did not racially abuse evra just a mix up of words (his granfather is black), even evra wrote in his statement that he did not think Suarez was a racist, but what happened to evra who said he abused Suarez and he got no ban, so is it fair that only one person banned?, as the say F.A (ferguson association), did rooney get his 3 game ban reduced to 2 games for deliberately kicking someone from behind, enough said!

  23. Redmanmars says:

For all their posession United didn’t create many chances. Liverpool, pounced on the mistakes that were made.
Turning a blind eye to the Hillsborough chants? WAATP, I (foolishly) expected better. Anyone who didn’t expect Evra to get booed is delusional, Liverpool fans hated & booed him before the Suarez saga. I’m with Collymore on this one. Suarez can expect a similar reception at Old Trafford.
As for the monkey-actioning idiot he overstepped the mark and can expect to never see the inside of a stadium again.

  24. Degs says:

“for the Liverpool crowd to boo the Manchester United captain simply for being the victim of racism was utterly contemptuous.”

They booed him because they don’t like him and believe that he lied and/or exaggerated his claims against Suarez.

Rooney and Neville get/got booed to a much greater extent – is that racist too?
Or is it just when the unpopular player is black?

The only ones who think the booing was racially motivated seem to be the ones complaining about it.

  25. Degs says:

“Suarez admitted to calling Evra a ‘negro’.”

No he didn’t. He called ‘negro’ (in Spanish), not ‘a negro’.

There’s a report available which, if you took the time to read it, would give you an idea as to why the Liverpool fans are upset about the case and Suarez’s ban.
