I’ve never rated Darron Gibson that highly, but boy, he has a wicked shot on him. Whether that’s enough for him to make the grade at United, I’m not sure.

Gibson is 22 now and you’d think he might have played more for United’s first team by now, but perhaps this man-of-the-match performance will be the turning point in his Old Trafford career. Fergie was certainly impressed by the Northern Ireland international’s star turn:

“He’s the one player now at our club who can get a goal for us outside the box. He has tremendous power in his shooting and his second goal in particular was fantastic.

“To me, the two stars tonight were Gibson and Anderson. They did very well. Anderson started to impose himself in the second half. He’s very quick and powerful and when he does that he’s a handful.”

For their part, a near-full-strength Spurs never got going – Arry Redknapp was so annoyed with his side’s lame display that he ducked out of the post-match press conference. Very disappointing for all Yids – that’s a realistic shot at silverware gone.

You must surely be in the minority if you’ve never rated Gibson that highly. The fact that he is 22 and hasn’t played many first team games does not take away from his quality as a player, it simply says United’s midfield is hard to break into. I don’t understand where the criticism of our younger players is coming from at the minute – it’s not like 1995 where we had a team in transition. The squad is settled and though there are areas in which we can make improvements why rush players through? He’s scored some decent goals in his first team appearances and put in decent performances each time. Give the kid a break.
