Manchester United 4-1 Wigan Athletic – Premier League – 15th September 2012

Summer signing Alex Buttner produced a fine display from left-back at Old Trafford, scoring one goal and setting up another as Man Utd strolled home to a four-goal win against Wigan.

United did have a chance to open the scoring from the penalty spot as early as the fifth minute, only for Javier Hernandez to fluff his lines. However, it took until the 51st minute for the home side to make the breakthrough, after the visitors impressed in the first half.

Paul Scholes, making his 700th appearance for the Red Devils, was the man to make the breakthrough, scoring from close-range before Hernandez doubled the score, after great work from Dutch defender Buttner. The former Vitesse star then netted himself, although Ali Al-Habsi should have done better in the Wigan goal. Another new-boy, Nick Powell, got his name on the scoresheet late on, firing home a rocket of a shot to give United an impressive 4-0 win.

Looks like Patrice Evra will have real competition for the left-back berth this season, then.
