United don’t look much like champions without Wayne Rooney, who sat out this one after aggravating his sore knee for England on Wednesday. This time it was Prem legend Paul Scholes who got them out of trouble – they have so many match-winners, don’t they – with a composed finish inside the box. It was The Ginger Ninja’s 100th Prem goal. Scholesy has never been a particularly prolific goal scorer, even for a midfielder, but he does seem to score a hell of a lot of crucial goals.

Wolves should have made it 1-1 in the dying seconds, but Sam Vokes blazed over from no more than six yards out. If only Vokes had shown a fraction of the composure of Scholes, he would have scored, but he glimpsed glory and bottled it. With Hull getting spanked by Everton, at least Wolves remain outside the bottom three, and with a superior goal difference to Phil Brown’s men. On current form, I’d tip Hull to go down with Pompey and Burnley; Wolves are playing a hell of a lot better than the Tigers right now.
