A transfer six months in the making, Manchester United have announced that Ander Herrera has joined the club from Athletic Bilbao after the Spanish midfielder bought himself out of his €36million release fee earlier today…

Herrera told the United club site:

“Signing for Manchester United is a dream come true. I have played at Old Trafford for Athletic Club in the Europa League and it was one of the highlights of my career so far.

“I have joined United to do all I can to help the team reach the club’s objectives.

“Having arrived on Tuesday, I’m excited to now be living in Manchester and I can’t wait for my first game in United’s famous red shirt.

“I will never forget my time with Athletic Club and I’d like to thank the fans and staff for all their support and, above all, wish all my fantastic former team-mates all the best for the future.”

Very, very expensive (maybe it’s that ‘Spanish premium’ we’ve heard so much about?) but a good signing none-the-less.

How do you plead, United fans?

I really don’t understand this signing. Where is he supposed to play? Why are we spending EUR 36 million on a player similar to, if not significantly less talented than Mata? All I can say is that this signing is the first of many because bringing in Herrera does not solve any of United’s problems.

A great signing IMO, definate upgrade on any of the washed up or just pure pants midfielders we have. Personally i would dump rooney off for whatever we can get for him and actually play a central attacking midfielder as a central attacking midfielder. give hernandez and welbeck some time up front as backup to VP

Finally the Quality central mid united have needed since I retired. Good signing

  4. Zam says:

@AGM, outside of nationality, he hasn’t much in common with Mata, more like a Wilshere who’s bones and tendons aren’t made of styrofoam. He’ll also be playing as an actual CM, I would believe.

  5. Captain Fantastic says:

This is the first pure CM that we’ve signed since 2007 that could slot straight into the starting XI right away, which is frankly long overdue. For all of his brilliance, not replacing the midfield was SAF’s biggest mistake. Great signing and a good start to plugging the numerous holes. Hopefully just the start.

Not in Fellaini’s class, but still a good a signing…..
Captain Fantastic, letting Pogba go was Fergie’s biggest mistake
