Preston North End 1-3 Manchester United – FA Cup Fifth Round – 16th February 2015

Manchester came from behind to beat Preston on Monday night, a victory which sets up a cracking quarter-final against holders Arsenal.

In the first-half, the visitors struggled to turn their possession into decent chances with Radamel Falcao struggling up front against a disciplined Preston side. Then, just after the break, the Lilywhites took the lead, when David De Gea made a meal of a Scott Laird shot.

On the hour-mark, Louis Van Gaal replaced the ineffective Falcao with Ashley Young and soon the Red Devils were level after with Young supplying Ander Herrera who fired home. However, the goal was mired in controversy with Wayne Rooney, in an offside position, just about dodging the shot but definitely interfering with play. Soon after, Marouane Fellaini powered home a second for United before Rooney made sure of the victory, converting a spot-kick after a rather blatant dive.

The result sees Van Gaal’s charges now face Arsenal at Old Trafford in the last eight while Preston boss Simon Grayson can both be proud of his players and disappointed at the standard of officiating.
