They’re all winners in Pies’ eyes

As our pals over at Anorak have pointed out, no football match is complete without without newspapers awarding players a score out of 10 afterwards – with last night’s FA Cup ding-dong between Manchester United and Arsenal being no different.

Whereas the Daily Mail declared Danny Welbeck to be the best player on the pitch, The Mirror opted for the altogether more pragmatic choice of Francis Coquelin.

However, it was over in The Times where things got really interesting, with the paper obviously using an incredibly complex set of algorithms to ascertain that Mesut Ozil was their top scorer with an impressive rating of 8/10 despite, it would appear, not actually being the game’s best player…

A quick and easy way to undermine the whole concept.

It’s almost as if “out of ten” player ratings are completely arbitrary or something.

As for Ozil. the poor sod just can’t do right for doing wrong at the moment!

And one would think that is you “flickered with intent on occasion”, it would be enough to earn the match ball! What more do they want?
