As was foretold by the prophecy, today’s Random Great Goal is slightly less than random, providing a bit of much needed yang to accompany Ian Rush’s expertly-taken yin from yesterday.

Plucked from the October archives of the very same season (the inaugural 1992/1993 Premier League campaign), here we have a proper beauty scored by Manchester United against Liverpool in the first league ding-dong between the two sides, with Mark Hughes doing the uncharacteristically deft honours.

Famed for his seismograph-troubling thumping volleys, Sparky instead decided to demonstrate his delicate side by caressing a perfect first-time, over-the-shoulder lob over the Grob and into the back of the net…

The goal was one of two Hughes managed to score in the last ten minutes to salvage at 2-2 draw at Old Trafford.

A selection of other random great goals on Pies…
