Liverpool 1-2 Manchester United – Premier League – 22nd March 2015
A fine brace from Juan Mata fired Manchester United to a superb win against Liverpool at Anfield.
The Spanish schemer opened the scoring after just 14 minutes, firing home after good work from Ander Herrera. And for the rest of the first period, it was the Red Devils who impressed, although Adam Lallana did have a chance to level the scores for the Reds.
The pivotal moment in the game came just after the re-start, with sub Steven Gerrard rightly sent off after just 38 seconds for a nasty stamp on Herrera. Despite going a man down, the Reds were much better in the second-half, but it was the visitors who would score again, with Mata netting courtesy of an outstanding strike on the hour-mark.
Liverpool did get themselves back in the game late on, through Daniel Sturridge, although Martin Skrtel was lucky to make it two reds for the Reds after a bad challenge on David De Gea. Wayne Rooney also missed a penalty late on but Louis Van Gaal’s charges hung on for a precious win.
The Red Devils stay fourth, but are now five points clear of fifth-placed Liverpool, who will be ruing that moment of madness from their skipper.
