According to the Independent, Manchester United are preparing to cut their losses on Robin van Persie come the summer after seeing a fairly ropey season petere out into injury-blighted nothingness.
Van Persie, 31, has a year left on his current contract and United are keen to recoup at least a sliver of the £24million they paid for him rather than losing him for nothing next year, while replacing him with a younger, more reliable model in one fell swoop.
Although undoubtedly still a world class forward on his day, Van Persie is quite obviously on the wane and getting shot might not be the worst idea Ed Woodward’s ever had.
Who knows, maybe United might go all in on attempting to jump-start Radamel Falcao by signing him up and bumping him straight to the top of the pecking order?
There’s a top notch predatory finisher in there somewhere, they just need to root him out.
The alternative is to blow their beans elsewhere, with the Indy (as well as several other sources) linking United, once again, with a long-mooted move for Edinson Cavani.
However, a deal isn’t quite as preposterous as it once seemed, with PSG reportedly hell bent on acquiring Lyon goal machine Alexandre Lacazette – theoretically leaving Cavani (who hasn’t ever looked 100% comfortable in Paris) free to waltz on, providing someone out there is willing to stump up the necessary 35 million reddies.
Who knows? This could be the summer that one of the most protracted transfer rumours of the modern age actually comes to fruition.
All we need now is for Leandro Damiao to finally join Spurs and the circle will be complete!
