Forget the Champions League, Man Utd and Chelsea are still much better than Liverpool

74047622.gifTo all Liverpool fans who have argued that they’d rather win the Champions League than the Premiership (and I’ve read more than a few such arguments in the last couple of days), that’s fair enough if you genuinely believe that, but don’t for a minute think that you’re suddenly a better side than Man Utd or Chelsea: you’re not. No way.
The league table doesn’t lie – a cliche but perfectly true. Man U are a massive 18 points ahead of Liverpool in the Prem, whilst the gap between Chelsea and the Pool is 13 points, still a considerable margin. Rafa Benitez is great at preparing his team for one-off cup games, but let’s not kid ourselves – despite Liverpool’s defeat of Chelsea in the CL semi final, the two best teams in England this season have been United and Chelsea, by some distance – Liverpool and Arsenal have been in with the also-rans. Another CL trophy would be a great bridesmaid’s bauble to take back to Anfield and parade on an open-top bus, but the league is still what counts above anything else. Just a reminder, like.

True. As a Liverpool fan I would much rather win the league – no question.
Try telling that to the Chelsea and United fans.
You always want what you can’t have.

  2. SteelScouser says:

You are correct, Pool are not top-two this season to be sure. However, that’s what makes beating Chelski so much more satisfying – knowing that our Reds are heavily overmatched, and yet through Rafa’s tactics (criticize them all you want, I don’t know how else we’re supposed to beat Chelsea with what we’ve got) and the players’ determination we’ve done it again. Fantastic.
Hopefully the transfer market this season brings us a talent like Fernando Torres or the like…that would bring us a step closer.

Winning the league is always better imo. In a cup not always the best team wins, luck of the draw or whatever. The league don’t lie.
Liverpool are boring and ugly I hope Milan take them to school.

‘Liverpool and Arsenal have been in with the also-rans.’
A 2-1 at Barcelona would beg to differ. I haven’t seen Chelsea put in a performance like that.
But I (as a Liverpool sympathiser) agree, right now (before Benitez can unleash his 40m quid shopping spree) Man U and Chelsea (marginally) are better. The Scouse defence and midfield are as good as any in Europe, but they’re still a bit light up front; as much as I like Crouchie and Kuyt (and they have Bellamy as well), they’re no Drogba’s or Rooney’s.
Bring in Huntelaar off of Ajax, or maybe even Eto’o.

See, as a United fan I’d rather have seen them win the Champion’s League, but there’s no debating it’s not worth nearly as much as the Premiership.
This for two reasons – because we haven’t won it nearly as much and Liverpool have, as my scouse friends remind me, and the CL final is of the evening between my first two exams and I’m going to need cheering up!

I don’t really understand this post. I haven’t met a liverpool fan that is stupidly confused about how they are apparently better than Manchester United or Chelsea, nor myself as a Liverpool fan am under this impression.
Liverpool were brilliant against Chelsea in midweek and proved that they can outperform arguably the strongest team in the country, Liverpool’s problem is, and I’m assuming next year will be no different, that they are far too inconsistent and usually underperform against teams they expect to beat. Manchester United or Chelsea will win them games without question, Liverpool simply are not a team you cant bet on.
However I think Benitez is a clever man and with each season I think he will learn and improve things, were going in the right direction for now. With some new talent (up top and on the wings I think we lack depth) I think Liverpool could be a much bigger threat next year. But this year Manchester United’s unstoppable form has been key to the title race.

I’d rather win the league, but it’s not that much more of a priority. After all, Kings of Europe is higher up the ladder than Kings of England, since the former includes the latter.
To say more luck is involved in the CL is not entirely true either. Liverpool had a much harder Premiership schedule at the beginning of the season than either Man U or Chelsea and suffered even more bad luck through injuries. Injuries can affect the league play more as does momentum.

  8. Mark says:

As a Football fan any silver wear and qualifying for next seasons CL is the sign of a good season, ask any fan of any club. As a Liverpool fan I’d rather have both. To say that Rafa or Liverpool are not good enough to match Chelsea and Utd is rubbish, take away our poor start to the season (injuries and new signings)we have stayed in touch with the front 2. And boring???? the most entertaining matches this season have been provided by Liverpool, Arsenal, & Man Utd. Chelsea have been poor to watch at best

  9. Ollie, Pies Ed. says:

Visser, I’m talking about the (probably plastic) Pool fans on web forums, many of whom were lording it over Chelsea / Man U fans after the semis. Genuine Pool fans know where it’s at, I have no doubt.

  10. Molby says:

    “Liverpool are boring and ugly”
I think you’re getting us mixed up with Gary Neville.
Yeah, I haven’t heard any Liverpool fan say that we are better than Man United or Chelsea over a Premiership season. What I will say is that we were really unlucky to have a W1 L3 record against those 2 teams in the league.

  11. Thom says:

It’s true that there are league teams and there are Cup teams. Everyone is constantly going on about how shit-hot Milan are at the moment; but in the Italian league they are 4th. Even without their points deduction they’d still be 3rd, a LONG way behind Roma.
Arguably league position demonstrates a better team, but as a United fan I still have to appreciate the way Liverpool tackle the Champions League. And anyone who thinks Milan will tear them apart in the final is a fool.

Nice to see this place is full of level headed people. The BBC 606 forums are full of idiots. The Liverpool fans over there believe the trophy is already at Anfield, and seem to think that getting to the CL final, coming 3rd (or maybe even 4th) and doing nothing in the domestic cups beats getting to the FA cup final, coming 1st/2nd in the PL and the CL semis.
