After seeing his role reduced gradually over the course of last season, it would appear that Robin van Persie is on the verge of leaving Manchester United for pastures anew…

According to the Guardian, Van Persie and his agent Kees Vos have “reached an agreement in principle” with Fenerbahce, with both the 31-year-old Dutchman’s personal terms and a four-year contract now ready to be signed off. Indeed, all that remains to be finalised is the transfer fee.

It’s also reported that Van Persie’s wife has reservations about moving to live in Turkey but has since warmed to the idea after spending last week in Istanbul.

Even though he’s now moving ever so slightly past his prime, Van Persie will represent a cracking signing for a team like Fener (what is it with Turkish sides attracting big names again all over a sudden?) and a more-than-handy £250,000 knocked off United’s weekly wage bill.

    Past his best but I still think if he were given a spell as United’s loan striker he could potentially do a better job than Rooney. He was never given the role last season but has shown he can operate the role far more disciplined than Rooney. His only main issue is his fitness.

    One thing us United fans have never seen sadly is Mata operating the #10 role behind RVP, something I think could have done very well. Neither ever relied on pace but good movement and technical play, 2 things neither have lost.

    Supposedly had a shocking season last season yet still managed to scoring ratio than Rooney with only 2 less league goals than Rooney while also playing 8 less games in the league. Even Mata’s goal to game ratio in the league (1 in 3) wasn’t that far off Rooney’s (1 in 2.75).

    But ever since Moyes bent over backwards and gave Rooney a new contract and LVG made him captain he’s become a massive hindrance in our development.

    Jeez … lots of players are headed to Turkey these days. I think MLS should be competing with Turkey for these types of guys …

    If RVP goes to Turkey, I wish him all the best.

    Thanks for the memories, thanks for the dedication, thanks for those AWESOME goals.

    Regarding the Turkey situation, it may soon come to pass that we can assemble a fantasy Dutch 11 from players who have played there!

    @jarren
    You would have to be a bit creative in midfield, but with Sneijder in the centre and RvP just in front of him, there’s actually a pretty decent 4-4-2 lineup to be made:

    goal: boy waterman
    defense: ulrich van gobbel, frank de boer, ryan donk, royston drenthe
    midfield: peter van vossen, wesley sneijder, van Persie, ryan babel
    strikers: pierre van hooijdonk, dirk kuijt
    coach: Guus Hiddink
