Transfer Balls: Rounding up the day’s football tittle-tattle so you don’t have to…

Man Utd Ready Mega-Bid For Ronaldo

According to the Manchester Evening News, Manchester United’s free-spending summer could end with the mother of all signings. None other than Cristiano Ronaldo is apparently in the sights of Ed Woodward and co., with the club readying a bid of around £80million for the ex-Red Devil.

A move to bring the Portuguese megastar was mooted during David Moyes’ time at Old Trafford and with various reports suggesting Ronaldo is less than pleased with new Real boss Rafa Benitez, who knows what might happen (actually I do – he won’t be going anywhere).

Arsenal Looking At Lewandowski

Arsenal are planning to turn their attention to Robert Lewandowksi, if their proposed move for Karim Benzema fails to materialise. The Gunners are keen to bring Benzema to the Gunners, with a £40million fee mooted for the French international. However, the a deal by no means definite, the Telegraph report that Arsene Wenger has a rather decent back-up plan in place.

Bayern hitman Lewandowski would cost the north Londoners up to £50million and has been rumoured to want a move away from the Allianz Arena. However, the Benzema deal still does look somewhat likely.

West Brom Take Punt On Diaby

Former Arsenal midfielder Abou Diaby is to be handed a career lifeline by West Brom, according to Sky Sports. The 29-year-old endured an injury-strewn nine years with the Gunners with Arsene Wenger showing incredible patience by keeping faith in the leggy midfielder. However, this summer Diaby was finally let go by the north Londoners.

Now, Baggies’ boss Tony Pulis is eager to give the French international a chance. With the player available on a free, this could prove to be an inspired signing by Pulis. Although the supremely gifted Diaby does still have to pass a medical first. So who knows what that might throw up.

Tottenham To Bag Berahino

The Mirror tells us that Tottenham are looking to bring in Saido Berahino to partner Harry Kane in attack. The Lilywhites have been ogling the West Brom man for some time, with the Baggies fighting off a move for the player last January. However, now the north Londoners are readying another bid of around £15million for the England U21 man.

With Roberto Soldado and Emmanuel Adebayor both on their way out at White Hart Lane, Mauricio Pochettino is well aware of the need for some new firepower, with the 21-year-old Berahino fitting the bill.

Canaries Keen On Marcos Alonso

Talksport tell us that Norwich are keen to bring Marcos Alonso back to the Premier League. The Spanish full-back spent three seasons with Bolton Wanderers between 2010 and 2013 and also had a loan spell with Sunderland in 2014. The 24-year-old currently plies his trade in Serie A with Fiorentina but could well be interested in a return to England.

The former Real Madrid man would add some top-tier experience to the Canaries’ squad and could be available for as little as £2million. Once they can convince him to sway Florence for Norfolk, that is.

Is Marcos Alonso Xabi’s brother? I thought Mikel Alonso (also had a pretty uninspiring spell with us a while back) was his brother. Not sure about Marcos.

I think 80 million might be a tad too much for a player who, if he moves, will be 31 years old. Ronaldo, at the moment, relies on pace and quickness of thought, two of the things that deteriorate as we get older. I can,t really see him sitting in the holding midfield role and doing a “Pirlo”, but you never know.

It’s not about any Benzema Deal. There will be no Lewandowski at the Emirates, because

    a) Lewandowski has no reason whatsoever to leave Bayern for an inferior club, he is their top striking option

    b) Bayern has no reason whatsoever to sell Lewandowski, he is their only pure striker with no real backup

    That makes about zero pies.
