The ending precisely nobody was expecting…

After flirting with Real Madrid all summer long only to see the move scuttled on deadline day, David De Gea has somehow been coaxed into signing a new, four-year contract at Manchester United.

That said, we fully expect the rumoured £200,000-a-week wages had something to do with it.

The new deal keeps De Gea, theoretically at least, at Old Trafford until at least 2019 though an option to extend it for a further year has also been thrown in.

The Spanish ‘keeper told United’s official club site:

I am delighted to be starting this new chapter in my United career. I have always enjoyed playing with these great players in front of our fantastic fans.

Manchester United is a special club and Old Trafford is an ideal place for me to continue to develop my career.

I’m looking forward to putting a difficult summer behind me and concentrating on working hard to improve and help my teammates to be successful.

Well, shiver our bleedin’ timbers.  All that fussing and he goes and signs on for four more years on a vastly inflated salary.

Of course it doesn’t necessarily mean that our Dave is sticking around for the long haul – it just means that his asking price is back to being sky-high.

You’ve got to give it to Jorge Mendes. The guy certainly knows how to turn agitation into £££.

Oh how I missed you De Gea…can’t wait for you to come back !!

  2. Straight Dave says:

At least if Madrid come calling next season they’ll have to pay what the player is actually worth, rather than pissing about with £20m offers. Fuck you Florentino Perez, and fuck you Madrid.

  3. Bruno says:

Big victory for United over Madrid. Now fuck off, you spanish cunts.

  4. SA says:

He figured out madrid were not serious, when they claimed Utd didn’t do their end of the deal in a timely manner, and madrid filed late trying to get him on the cheap, but seriously why play for the second best team in a three team league when u can play for the biggest club in the world,

  5. Jarren says:

Great to see him here at Old Trafford for another year.

It’ll be weird though, knowing he’s got one eye on next season in La Liga.

    Oh well.

I just worry about who we’ll get to replace him. He’s a quality keeper and every United supporter would like him to stay for the length of his contract, but we need to be scouting right now to find his replacement.

Is Cillessen good enough yet? He’s a Dutch international, he’s got World Cup experience, but would the move from the Eredivisie be too much?

  6. Dave says:

We all know he’s gotta put on the red face to have the fans support for another season so there’s the trick of feigning commitment, well played by club and player.

As for the whole situation, a nice theory could be that mendes and trafford worked together for a mutually beneficial situation. They fake a mishandling of the transfer, bump up Degea’s contract and Utd keep their man for a season longer. Real may not be too happy about being played like that, but they can’t always get what they want.
