73201155.jpgEdwin van der Sar had a poor FA Cup final and generally looked shaky in the second half of the season. The lanky Dutchman is 36 now and probably has one more season left in him at Old Trafford. But will Alex Ferguson trust him to be his No.1 keeper next season, or will he turn to Ben Foster, back from a loan spell at Watford? A third option is Tomasz Kuszczak, or Ferguson could even buy another stopper, perhaps Craig Gordon from Hearts. And don’t forget John O’Shea and Rio Ferdinand have also worn the green jersey this season.
So, a simple question. Put yourself in Fergie’s shoes – who should be Man Yoo’s first-choice ‘keeper next season?

Really don’t rate Van the other man. How he made team of the season in front of every other keeper i’ll never know…
But then can you put a keeper in nets that another keeper scored against whilst in his own half?

  2. Ollie, Pies Ed. says:

I’m not sure Foster is the answer either Col – I think Ferguson should look to sign a new keeper, although I don’t know who.

  3. daf says:

If Foster (my last name as well, would love to have that kit) really isn’t the answer, selling him would be a good bit of business as he’s seemingly highly rated amongst the league. If sold, I’d stick it out with VDS for one more year, but on a short leash for Kuszczak, and get a kid for cover.
VDS’ window is closing, so the question is really do you see Kuszczak as a #1 in a year or two, or a backup? You could make all your decisions at that position based on that question alone, regardless of foster’s prowess.

  4. J says:

Where were O’Shea and Rio in goal?

  5. Joe says:

I reckon Foster’s probably the long term solution, but Watford to Trafford is not a one-year gap. He’ll have to spend another year or two behind Sar and Kuszak (who probably isn’t on the level of VDS, though admittedly better than Carroll or most of the other muppets they flew in to replace Schmeichel)

  6. Mike says:

J – O’Shea was in goal against Spurs when van der Sar was injured and Man U had already used their 3 subs. (He even stopped Robbie Keane who was through on goal). Rio had originally taken the GK jersey but it was passed to ‘The Cat’ O’Shea.
To everyone else – Foster deserves a shot as he did well for Watford with a poor defence in front of him – so imagine how good he would be with Neville, Rio and Vidic for protection.

For me, I’d like to see the future England No.1 playing for the best team in the country (league places don’t lie do they?)
For that reason alone, Ben Foster should be played!

  8. daf says:

He’s not going to be England’s #1 if he’s #2/#3 at United. He needs first team games if he expects to start in the national side.
