On the day that Louis van Gaal led Manchester United to FA Cup final glory, the Red Devils are reportedly set to replace the Dutch coach with none other than Jose Mourinho.
The story comes from the BBC, who report that a deal to bring the 53-year-old Mourinho to Old Trafford was agreed in principle before the FA Cup final on Saturday.
Despite spending over £250million on new recruits in his two season with United, the 64-year-old van Gaal has only managed a fourth and a fifth place finish in the league, as well as consistently underwhelming the club’s fanbase with a less-than-exciting brand of football. Understandably this lack of success has left the Red Devils’ board less than impressed, with van Gaal now apparently shown the door.
Since being sacked by Chelsea back in December, Mourinho has been out work. However, the Portuguese manager has been strongly linked with a mocve to United ever since. And now it looks as though the ‘Special One’ will finally fulfill his ambition of sitting in the Old Trafford hot-seat.
With Pep Guardiola also joining Manchester City, next season’s Premier League should be an entertaining campaign, to say the least. Indeed, seeing if Mourinho can adjust his managerial style to cater for the Old Trafford faithful’s desire for sexy football is sure to be fascinating.
