A superb Marcus Rashford free-kick gave Manchester United a deserved 1-0 win away to Celta Vigo in their first legt Europa League semi-final clash on Thursday.

The Red Devils created enough chances in the first-half to put the game to bed, only for Celta Vigo ‘keeper Sergio Alvarez to thwart Rashford, Henrik Mkhitaryan and Jesse Lingard.

The hosts had chances to score themselves, with Daniel Wass and ex-Liverpool forward Iago Aspas spurning good chances.

Sergio Romero also kept out a deflected effort by Pione Sisto in the second period.

However, the game would be won in fine style, with the 19-year-old Rashford producing a fantastic curling free-kick on 67 minutes to give United a crucial away.

Jose Mourinho and co. are now in the driving seat in this tie, with a place in the final against either Ajax or Lyon looking likely.

What a talent that Rashford boy is!

Really hoping for a United vs Ajax final.

What a game that would be! Two powerhouses of European football, who have both failed to live up to their histories in recent years.

UEFA would be licking their lips too at such a lucrative final. No offence to the majority of teams in the Europa league, but not many can produce the glamour of Manchester United or Ajax.

Ajax OR Lyon? Come on Pies…

United has a one goal lead. Ajax is up by 3. So I think you probably meant to say Ajax vs United or Celta.

    • Geraldo says:

PSG were up by 4 against Barcelona a few weeks ago. Lyon are a quality side and are by no means out of the tie. Celta Vigo – who, on the evidence of last night’s game, are not a quality side – will need to play out of their collective skin at Old Trafford to turn the other semi final around.

      • A Nonny Moose says:

United are not really a quality side either. Barcelona were helped by crappy decisions, and they are in a different class from all four of these clubs. Oh, right, but Celta did beat them this season…

To suggest that a one goal lead, even an away goal, makes this tie more settled than the other is ridiculous.

Sorry to spoil your party but I already have here the results of the finals. And, yes, Lyon and Celta are very average teams and are already out of the Europa League:

Ajax 0x3 Manchester United (Miki, Rashford, Pogba)
Real Madrid 3×1 Juventus (Ronaldo hattrick / Dybala for Juve)

    Anyone want to bet?
