Manchester United are hoping to gazump Chelsea by signing Romelu Lukaku from Everton in a deal worth a record-breaking £100million.

That’s according to Matt Lawton in the Daily Mail, who reports that Jose Mourinho is desperate to kick start a slow summer in the tranfer market for the Red Devils by sealing a deal for the 24-year-old striker.

Lukaku netted 25 goals in the league last season for the Toffees and is seen by the Red Devils as the perfect man to replace Zlatan Ibrahimovic and help United launch a sustained title challenge next season.

While Chelsea themselves are still hoping to secure the services of Lukaku, a player who made 10 appearances for the club between 2011 and 2014, talks between the two clubs have stalled.

As for Manchester United, their ace in the pack could be Wayne Rooney.

The former Everton starlet is being strongly linked with a move back to his boyhood club, and may well be used to sweeten a deal for Lukaku.

The £100million figure being touted for Lukaku would eclipse the £89million paid by United for Paul Pogba last summer, and Mourinho would certainly enjoy getting one over on his old club.

However, the usual pinch of salt applies here – and with United closing in on Real Madrid striker Alvaro Morata, it could easily all come to nothing.

Still, what a story it would be if it does come to pass.
