Jesse Lingard was the match-winner for Manchester United, with the substitute’s late goal earning all three points against Chelsea at Old Trafford.

The game saw the two managers at least partially put their recent spat behind them, with earnest handshakes book-ending the game.

Chelsea, with Alvaro Morata starting in attack, came close to opening the scoring after just four minutes, with the Spaniard’s volley from close-range coming back off the crossbar.

The west Londoners would eventually take the lead just after the half-hour mark, with Willian finishing off a fine team move with his fourth goal in three matches.

However, the hosts leveled the scores before the break, when Romelu Lukaku finally broke his duck against the top six sides this season and fired home against his former team.

With the scores level, Antonio Conte took off starman Eden Hazard, to be replaced by Pedro.

However, it would be United sub Lingard who would provide the decisive blow, with the nippy midfielder heading home from a fine Lukaku cross.

The Blues should have gone level after that, when Morata’s effort was wrongly disallowed for offside.

United would hold on to secure a precious 2-1 victory which sees them go back into second, though still some 13 points behind Man City.

As for Chelsea, they arguably deserved to get something out of the game but instead they stay fifth, two points behind fourth-place Tottenham and with a Champions League berth now seriously in doubt come the end of the season.

Typical Man Utd, winning a game of football. Just as all those victimpool fans were getting ready to throw a parade for lifting the “but but but mommy mommy we were 2nd after 28 games for a whole 24 hours” trophy. Still, there’s always next year I suppose.

Typical Man Utd fan, more concerned about slagging off Liverpool than singing for their own team.
