As far as Manchester United’s ongoing search for defensive reinforcements is concerned, the great deadline day transfer tombola wheel in the sky has turned once again and this time it’s landed on Diego Godin.

Remembering he was quite good at the World Cup, Sky Sports News have cobbled together a story that United are “chasing a deal” for Godin, steadfast guardian of Atletico Madrid’s ‘goals conceded’ column.

After struggling to make headway in his pursuit of several preferred targets, Jose Mourinho has spread the net a little wider as the start of the Premier League season looms (United kick-off against Leicester City on Friday night).

Diego Godin could be the solution to Mourinho’s defensive woes yadda yadda yadda…

What they don’t mention is that Godin has a €20million release clause at Atleti after his contract ticked over into the final year, so it’s not like United would have to do much chasing if they wanted to trigger it – especially as last week they were supposedly giving serious countenance to bidding upwards of £90million for Harry Maguire.

All the more preventative, you might imagine, is Godin’s probable reluctance to leave the club he’s given his all for for the best part of a decade, a club at which he is universally adored, in order to babysit Chris Smalling and/or Phil Jones for the next two or three years.

If it looks and sounds like complete rubbish, there’s a good chance it’s probably complete rubbish.

Try again, Sky.

I wonder why they are so bad with transfers??? It’s impossible to believe that, with the money and the name they have, they can’t sign someone from Leicester, Tottenham, Atletico, etc. It’s not like they’re trying to land Modric from Real Madrid or Suarez from Barcelona, they can’t even buy a defender from Tottenham.
Maybe Mourinho is not wrong to be moody this time, Ed Woodward is so much inferior to other guys in the same position at other clubs. They must be able to sign these players, simple as that. It’s Manchester United, you should get what you want because you have power like – probably – no other club. If you can’t, then something is very wrong. Also, why not move for these guys earlier? It’s all wrong…

Ah, the customary fabricated transfer story involving Manchester United’s name in order to get people tuning in to Sky’s deadline day programme. Move along, folks, nothing to see here
