As the quibbling among Manchester United’s upper echelons continues to percolate, Jose Mourinho has quite literally laughed off speculation that he is edging ever closer to losing his job.

After several weeks of reported agitation, passive aggressive posturing and press conference walk-outs, tensions between Mourinho and the club’s board seem to have reached an uneasy accord over the past few days, with the United manager even dedicating Sunday’s 2-0 win over Burnley to vice-chairman Ed Woodward.

However, speculation remains that the Portuguese is not quite back in the good books yet – not that he’s overly bothered.

Asked about his job security by Italian reporters, Mourinho quipped that United couldn’t afford to sack him even if they wanted to (quotes via FourFourTwo):

They say I’m in danger, but I don’t think [I’m close to being fired].

If they send me away, do you have any idea how much money they would have to give me?

Too soon?

After a one-year extension was agreed in January, Mourinho’s current contract isn’t set to expire until the end of the 2019/20 season.

Given that David Moyes is still technically on the payroll, United may well be loathe to lump another hefty compensation package on top of their monthly outgoings, even if things began to take a real turn for the worse.

That said, United also aren’t a football club who are exactly famed for their fiscal prudence either.

    Erm, wut

He is not going to be sacked. United had one bad performance this season, against Brighton, and people are all over Jose. He was second in the league last season, way above the so called great teams of Liverpool, Spurs and Chelsea. Two FA cup finals in two years… are people blind?
