77460907.jpgEveryone, except maybe the most blinkered Spurs fan, has been waxing lyrical about Arsenal all season – apparently Wenger’s boys have taken the beautiful game and given it an even more stylish makeover.
Of course, they still haven’t won anything but their results this term suggest it’s only a matter of time – they’re still scoring goals through beautiful passing and movement but have added the resilience and efficiency that was once missing.
It’s been such a spectacle that some pundits are praising them for playing the best football ever. That’s quite a claim since there have been many great teams who’ve inspired the imagination in modern day football – Man United’s treble winners, Liverpool’s dominating side during the seventies, AC Milan and Real Madrid’s serial European Cup winners and Brazil’s benchmark 70s team.

It’s between Barc, AC and Arsenal really because old football was so different it is hard to compare them. Brazil 70’s were great but it is slow compared to today.
Man U were brilliant in 1997, but not so beautiful.

  3. Joe says:

Holland ’74 and ’88. No doubt in my mind, though I haven’t seen to much of Honved and Hungary in their prime.

  4. Miguel says:

Brazil 82, Brazil 70, Holland 74…In that order.
If we talk about BEATIFUL Football, no one comes close to Brazil 82. Them not winning the world cup that year was a shame.
The Barca Dream was wonderful to see, but I think they were a bit unbalanced (not total football). The Holland 74 team played “total football”, not beautiful football. However, they did have a few players that were magical.

    Liverpool? Don’t make me laugh.
    1. Holland (’74 – ’78)
    2. Brazil (’58, ’70, ’82)
    3. Milan (early/mid ’90s)
    4. Barcelona (early/mid ’90s)
    5. Real Madrid (’50s)
Of the English teams on that list, Arsenal would come first on beautiful football, although the Manchester United and Liverpool teams were more effective.

Liverpool?!?!?!?!… efficient perhaps, but not beautiful.
And how can you forget Holland…. Total Football? Its the first thing that comes to my mind when I think of beautiful football.

    Ajax from the 70’s

  8. While I am still glowing from Arsenal’s display against Slavia, I’ve voted for Brazil because they played tougher opponents in 1970. As for United in 1999, they did do the treble and had a great comeback to win the Champions League, the quality of their football was not as high as Arsenal’s is just now. I would even argue that while United this season has not won yet won anything, their quality and “beauty” is higher than that of their 1999 team. I guess the question now becomes what exactly does beauty mean then? Personally, I don’t always associate it with winning; though winning can be beautiful too…

The funniest list I’ve ever seen to choose from and what’s even funnier at the time of my voting AC Milan had 11 votes vs over 500 votes for Liverpool and Arsenal.. I honestly laughed out load.
Chris is RIGHT on the spot with his list; Holland 70’s Brazil late 60’s-70 and early 80’s Milan during the Golden Van Basten time.
