74192859.jpgFootball isn’t the same without Gary Neville. He’s one of the finest ever examples of a player who you love if he’s on your team, but absolutely hate if he’s not. Even Man Utd fans know deep down that he’s a bit of a humourless prat, but he’s their humourless prat.
We do miss G Neville, it’s true. We miss his obsession with the Man Utd badge, we miss his little moustache, we miss his remarkable consistency at right-back (how many howlers do you ever remember him making?), we miss his bloody-minded Man Utd-ness. I hope he does recover from the ankle and groin injuries that have kept him out of action since March.
Neville was forced to pull out of United’s reserve-team match against Sunderland last night amid fears his ankle has not yet healed. The medical staff at United have not put a firm date on when he might play again, which begs the question: is Neville’s playing career over? I, for one, hope not. It would be a sad way for an English footballing legend (I’m 100% serious about that) to bow out. Vote below.

I searched for ‘Gary Neville howler’ on Google and got 32,800 results.

  2. Ollie, Pies Ed. says:

Every defensive player in the world makes at least one howler in their career – Neville has made far fewer than most. Your Google search doesn’t disprove my assertion!
    cheers, Ollie

“gary neville howler” – 1 result (robinson/gary neville howler vs croatia”
One of the most consistent players to ever put on an England shirt.

  4. Jon says:

I was kidding with my Google ‘research’, but I can think of a few mistakes that he’s made. Consistent, sure, but never anything special. He’s a very lucky boy to have so many England caps.

    Is his career over…..
    I hope so

15.09 Lets hope he gets his coaching badges. He’d make a great manager, outspoken and loyal to the cause. There IS something about him which is very irritating, but his confidence and defensive quality make him credible. And he’s hard, northern manc style. Sorry Jon, but he is special, he’s has made a huge contribution to uniteds success over the last 12 years or so. His brother on the other hand… Well the biggest mystery of the modern era is how this “squad player” has managed to play so many times for his country under so many different coaches. It’s baffling

It is with delight point out his shocking howler against Shaun Goater in the derby? A 3-1 City victory, I might add.

  8. Jon says:

I just think it highlights this country’s baffling willingness to settle for mediocrity in its players. But I guess I’m in the minority, so I’ll just hush up and stand corrected.

  9. Betting Guru says:

At 32 and with these injury problems he cannot afford to lose another yard of pace. Nevertheless his leadership and experience are assets Fergie will be looking to going into the crucial Xmas period.

  10. He probably has around 3 months at the most to save his career. If he’s not back on his feet and playing again by easter, its probably time to retire. At his age a year out is far too long.
Hopefully he will come back and keep Fergie from sniffing round Alan Hutton.
