After a couple of week’s worth of wrangling, gangly midfielder Sergio Busquets has signed a new contract at Barcelona which will bind him to the Catalan club until 2015.

So said the man himself:

“I’m very happy with the renewal of my contract. It is the best way to start the year and great news for everybody.”

Barca issued the following statement to confirm the details:

“Club president Sandro Rosell and Sergio Busquets signed the new deal this morning at the club offices.

“The agreement ensures the player will stay at the club at least until 2015 and that could be automatically extended by a further season based on the number of games he plays in the final season of the contract.”

Included in the small print is a buy-out clause to the tune of a colossal £130 million, meaning Manchester United may have to start snuffling around elsewhere if they truly are on the lookout for a new holding man.

    I do love the arrogance of some United fans – why on Earth would Busquets leave Barcelona for United? He’s already at the most successful club in the world in the last few years, has been at the club for his whole life, which is managed by one of his idols, he plays every week AND Spain has far more relaxed tax laws than England, meaning the Premier League wouldn’t even be that good for his bank balance.

    Also, just as an aside, the ‘Buy-out’ clause mentioned is compulsory for every player’s contract in Spain, even Leo Messi has one. Just before some rabid United fan jumps on it….

  2. Joe says:

    What’s it for Messi, 10 billion? Am I the only one who doesn’t rate Bicuits btw?

  3. Chris says:

    Messi’s is £215m, or so I have read.

  4. The Yank says:

    Yeah… United never wanted Busquets. The title could just as easily have been “Arsenal Can Have Sergio Busquets for £130m” or better yet “[insert club name here] Can Have Sergio Busquets for £130m”.

    Another day, another stupid jab at United. *yawn*

    @Dan – What United fans do you mean specifically? As far as I can tell, you just went off on a rant about the “arrogance of some United fans” entirely unprovoked.

    Manchester United: Not arrogant, just better. GGMU

  5. Yankee Manc says:

    +1 for Yank. GGMU

    @The Yank

    I live near Manchester, and therefore am unfortunately in contact with a large number of United fans. Most of them have been telling me for months that Busquets is definately on his way to Old Trafford, along with half the best players in Europe. They don’t listen to any reasoning, hence the ‘arrogance’.

  7. JD says:

    dan, you mean there’s United fans near Manchester? humm..

  8. The Yank says:

    @Dan

    I understand where you’re coming from, but Busquets-to-United talk has never been anything more than typical speculative transfer BS. Unfortunately, people everywhere get sucked into gossip. I only hope you don’t believe ALL United fans are arrogant because that is simply not the case. Yes, there are many, but give me any club and I’ll give you arrogant supporters of that club.

    @JD Head down Sir Matt Busby Way on matchday and tell me there aren’t any United fans in Manchester.

    Most of the players that are linked with United are done so by rumors strated by agents hoping to get a nibble on the line. In the end only a very small percentage acutally end up at the club. The only way to know if the club is going to buy someone is when they acutally do. Until then it’s just a bunch of gossiping hens doing what they do best. And I never heard a word that this particular player was in United’s sights anyway.

    @The Yank

    I don’t believe the United fans I know represent the every United fan, which is why I used the word ‘some’ in my original post.

    Unfortunately I do believe that this is representative of the general attitude of English football fans, they simply can’t believe why any player wouldn’t want to play in The Greatest League In The World ahead of any other team, regardless of affiliation.

  11. Jimbo says:

    to be fair, nobody was even talking about him coming here. not upset about this in the slightest. just like the dozens of players linked to United every month.

  12. Seanie-O says:

    130 million for this overrated, diving little prick? What a joke.

  13. tom says:

    why would united want another holding midfielder.with the great SCHOLES about 2 retire and the waste of space carrick in the side sneijder is the only player (id say) fergie would want.

  14. The Yank says:

    @Tom Too bad Sneijder re-signed with Inter until 2015… And Carrick is not a waste of space. Watch some games and wisen up little boy.

  15. Joe says:

    Carrick’s got a few things going for him, but he’s extremely weak-minded and needs about five minute to pick a pass, by which time the ball is usually gone

  16. meee says:

    numbers have gone crazy…

    i truly hate that diving mthrfckr

  17. tamba A jaba says:

    i like this deal because he love the team so much that he can not leave the team at this time

  18. tamba A jaba says:

    this is ok for me because he love the team so he does not want to leave the team at this point in time thank to the father and mom of sergio.

  19. tom says:

    re the yank.what do you mean little boy you muppet.i watch every game and carrick is muck.he gives the ball away 2 much 4 some1 who is supposed 2 be a great passer.as 4 sneijder,wat does a contract mean nowadays.

  20. Manchester is RED says:

    @ DAN

    I’m a season ticket holder and i haven’t heard nothing about this from anyone. So you full of sh*t basically.

  21. tony says:

    hmmm people calling a champions league, world cup and 3 time league champion overrated…. are yeah coz carrick, fletcher and anderson have acheived this. wake up you fools, busquets is far better than any man u midfielder apart from scholesy at his best.
