PSG have paid to place a number of adverts in various newspapers and magazines to congratulate their opponents, Les Herbiers, on reaching the Coupe de France final.

The two sides will meet at the Parc des Princes on Tuesday night in what looks like a formality as PSG look to wrap up their fourth consecutive cup.

Semi-professional Les Herbiers are currently 13th in the Championnat National – the third tier of French football – dangling just two points above the relegation zone with one league game left to play.

By way of contrast, PSG are a fully professional outfit and are currently 17 points clear at the top of Ligue 1 having clinched the title weeks ago.

Still, without a hint of snark, the Parisians posted adverts in publications across France to pay tribute to the effort made by Les Herbiers on making it through to the grand finale.

The message reads:

Anchored in the memories of many regional teams, [the Coupe] has offered the most beautiful epics, like Calais in 2000, Carquefou in 2008, or Quevilly in 2010 and 2012.

These clubs […] have shown some of the best sporting values: the team spirit, the desire to win and self-sacrifice.

Today, it is the turn of Vendee Les Herbiers to climb to the final.

Whatever the result, we are already proud to face this admirable finalist in the oldest French football competition.

Our status (amateur or professional) doesn’t matter, neither do the trophies or the predictions. The truth will come on the pitch. Eleven against eleven.

Bravo Les Herbiers and long live football!

Now, there’s every chance PSG could reach double figures, but still – it’s a lovely sentiment and something they didn’t have to do.
