Pele wasn’t quite right when he said that an African nation would win the World Cup by the turn of the century. But, with the players emerging from the continent and the next tournament in South Africa, surely it’s only a matter of time?
We’ve been asking you to vote for the best players representing various countries in the Premier League with your results naming Elano (Brazil), Tim Cahill (Australia) and Cesc Fabregas (Spain) and your foreign All Stars so far.
None of those names caused too much surprise. But, if we take the African nations as a whole, it gets decidedly more difficult to pick a winner as our 14 player shortlist shows.

Are there any absent African players that you think should have made the shortlist?

    Where’s Kanu????

  3. Peter says:

A very good poll again Pies, very tight had to go with Toure above Drogba and McCarthy, it’s even tighter the poll when you put in eboue, so glad you left out zokora though well done.

  4. Peter says:

    Kanu’s well past his best.

you have geremi and mido, but not adebayor or eboue? i guess not everyone could be posted although i’d vote for toure anyway

  6. Surprised that Drogba doesn’t have more votes, one of the few strikers to score over 30 goals in Europe, and without penalties.
He’s so impressive people seem to take the fact that he scores regularly for granted.
Glad to see that Toure’s winning so far though. An unsung hero in Wenger’s quiet revolution.

  7. Nicky S says:

Even though I am a Gooner myself, I suspect the voting is slightly skewed by the fact that Chelsea’s fans are splitting their votes between Essien and Drogba, whereas all the Gooners only have Kolo to vote for.
Yeah, and as said above, Mido but no Eboue or Adebayor?
    I went for Essien myself.

  8. mike says:

I chose Essien – would love to have him in a Sunderland shirt, not that there’s any chance of that…

  9. by far the greatest African player in the premiership is Drogba. Also the best alone striker in the world.
