What’s the biggest derby in the Premier League?

Local rivalries were resumed this weekend with a couple of big game derbies between clubs sharing the same cities – but with very little else in common.
The North East derby between Sunderland and Newcastle was a bit disappointing and the Toon Army was lucky enough to come away with a point after being outplayed for most of the game. But the Birmingham versus aston Villa game for the second city’s bragging rights was more spicy – eventually settled by local lad Gabriel Agbonlahor’s last minute winner.
With at least 12 teams in the Premier League that can claim fierce local rivals there will be more big games that divide regions this season – but which one can claim to be the the mother of all derbies?

stupid scousers are padding all these votes. the merseyside derby is a tea party compared to the manc derby

Definatly Tottenham vs Arsenal. And although its not strictly a derby game Man Utd vs Liverpool has more of a derby feel than most.

Don’t worry I’ve just pressed arsenal – tottenham about 50 times. It’s the biggest, most violent derby in england none of these however compare to the Milan derby or even the liverpool – man utd derby

surely the Wednesday v Sheffield United match? :)
i’d go for Villa and Brum though, if only because those games are generally more fun to watch and considerably less hyped than the rest.
and take chelsea off there for goodness sake, it’s insulting to fulham :)

I think there must be some serious double-voting from some hopeful Arsenal fans. For me it could be any of them except the Manchester derby and Chelsea v Fulham. Don’t think that just because Newcastle and Sunderland are 10 miles apart the derby is any less passionate.

They may not be in the Premiership anymore, but surely it has to be the Leeds United – Man United derby?

  11. chrissmari says:

Leeds/Man Utd is not a derby.

  12. What do you class as biggest?? Most important? Closest gap between the clubs? Biggest / most passionate fan base? Tension between fans? I can think of different winners using different criteria.

I think we really need a bit of abjectivity for this. Obviously as a newcastle fan i’ll be going for the tyne-wear derby, especially because of the fan-bans and violence in recent years. But lets be honest, all of these pale in comparison to what i’ve heard about most derbys in spain and italy, as well as the old firm and boca/river
