The African Cup of Nations has been going, in one form or another, since 1957. The 1972 final between Congo Brazzaville (also known as the Republic of Congo – not to be confused with the Democratic Republic of Congo, formerly Zaire) and Mali remains one of the most memorable finals, and not just because it was Congo’s only triumph in what was then called the African Nations Cup.

The opening goal, scored by Mali (playing in the darker strip), is a cracker, and the others aren’t so bad either, thanks to some generous defending. Congo (in white) won the match 3-2, one if its finest ever football moments.
