Six of the worst hate-filled tackles

25th, February 2008

Martin Taylor’s tackle on Eduardo that led to the Arsenal striker’s gut wrenching injury wasn’t born from malice – despite what Arsene Wenger may retract at a later date. But, we have seen a few horror tackles down the years that obviously had more intention of taking the player than the ball – and there’s no prizes for guessing who tops that list…
1. Roy Keane on Alfe-Inge Haaland
Keano’s ‘take that you c*nt’ retribution on Alfe-Inge Halland was a grudge he had been harbouring for four years

2. Harald Schumacher on Patrick Battiston
The German keeper intentionally collided with France’s Battiston with as much force as his namesake driving a Ferrari

3. Ben Thatcher on Pedro Mendes
Perennial thug Ben Thatcher couldn’t hold on to Pedro Mendes – so he thought he’d give him the elbow instead

4. Zidane on Materazzi
The French genius loses his head when it mattered the most

5. Andoni Goikoetxea on Maradona
The so-called Butcher of Bilbao practically filleted Maradona during his days at Barca

8. Thierry Henry on David Weir
Not a name you’d expect to see on this list but this is probably the worst two-footed lunge we’ve ever seen…even from a striker

Let us know if you can remember any other revenge-filled tackles
