July is a good time to indulge in a little ante-post gamble. The bookies usually offer a few tempters to punters willing to stick their neck out. There are several tasty bets to be had in the Premiership top scorer market (all odds Paddy Power). Here are my top three bets  – refreshing to report that they’re all young, talented and English:

1) Jermain Defoe 28-1 The Spurs striker (pictured) is in red-hot form (according to his manager) and has plenty to prove to new England boss Steve McClaren. JD looks an each-way steal at 28-1.

2) Dean Ashton 33-1
West Ham’s talented young centre-forward settled in fast at Upton Park and there’s no reason why he won’t get goals in a Hammers team that likes to attack. Another each-way bargain.

3) Darren Bent 28-1
Don’t think that Bent is a flash in the pan. He’s played for England at every level and this season should see him break into the England set-up on a regular basis. The arrival at Charlton of Jimmy-Floyd Hasselbaink, who provides as many goals as he scores these days, can only be a good thing for Bent.
