Football GIF: Wigan’s Callum McManaman Gets Away With Horrendous Lunge On Massadio Haidara

This really is a 100% appalling tackle from Wigan winger Callum McManaman. He may have got a touch on the ball, but the player then launches himself at Newcastle’s Massadio Haidara, catching him right on the knee.

Referee Mark Halsey did look unsighted when the challenge happened and so nothing was given for the assault, but surely the FA can do something in terms of retrospective action?

At half-time, the coaching staff of both sides had a right bit of afters in the tunnel, with Magpies  coach John Carver sent to the stands for the second-half along with Wigan’s Graham Barrow.

As for Haidara, who was rushed to hospital, it looks as though he has suffered serious knee ligament damage. Utterly shameful from McManaman. One wonders if Ryan Shawcross’ mum came to pick him up after the game?

Christ. Don’t demonise the lad. If you watch the whole challenge rather than just this wonderfully context-free clip you’ll see it was a clearance that turns into a horrifically timed challenge. No malice, no intent. He’ll get a three match ban, and rightly so, but don’t turn him into the devil incarnate like most of the press are desperately trying to do.

he should go on the sex offenders’ register for that

  3. […] as they dodge the drop once again. However, the result was overshadowed by Callum McManaman’s dreadful lunge on Newcastle’s Massadio Haidara which looks to have inflicted serious knee ligament damage on the French […]

Wow…still not letting go of the Shawcross incident…very big of you

dan, if hes trying to clear it he wouldnt go in studs first

    btw its the left knee

Your account of the event seems to suggest that there were 2 phases to the incident “but the player then launches himself”.
He didn’t go for the player with studs showing but what he did was take a wild swing at the ball. Reckless but not malicious. He will be punished, rightly so, and should then be left alone. Shame that we didn’t have super slow mo from 20 different angles when a certain MUFC player was at the top of his game. That would have given you something to discuss ;-)

@dan. Yeah poor old Callum, he’s the real victim here . . .

M, again, if you watch the whole incident he didn’t go in studs first. He took a swing for the ball and momentum took him through his leg, rather than a stamp. Hardly a Roy Keane Special

Dan is obviously Dave Whelan’s pen name

I think it’s about time Wigan fucked off from the Premier League. I actually wanted them to stay up but i really hope they get relegated now. They offer nothing for the Premier League, just space occupiers.

  12. anon says:

No action for Callum after all.

  13. Jarren says:

    Yup, no action taken.

As someone said in the comments section of the BBC Sport site…

Swear into the camera: Retrospective ban

Tweet something vaguely offensive: Have a ban, you heathen

Commit career-threatening tackle: Carry on as usual, ref didn’t see it

And this is from the AUTHORITY in football.

If this incident was played out in a fictitious game of FIFA online it’d be blamed on the work of trolls.

@Dan: Totally agree with you. Really surprised by the lack of judgement here.
