Newcastle United 0-3 Sunderland – Premier League – 14th April 2013
The much-maligned Paulo Di Canio steered his Sunderland side to a superb 3-0 win away at rivals Newcastle on Sunday, a result that moves the Black Cats three points clear of the drop-zone.
Stephane Sessegnon silenced the Toon Army early on after firing past Tim Krul. From then on, the visitors had the better of the chances, although Papiss Cisse did go close on a few occasions. Indeed, after the break, the Senegal international had a goal wrongly chalked-off for offside, and soon after Adam Johnson curled home to double his side’s advantage.
With eight minutes left on the clock, sub David Vaughan, possessed by the Holy Spirit Of St Paulo, fired home a superb third to give Di Canio and co. a vital and well-deserved win.
Sunderland are now three points above the drop-zone while Alan Pardew’s Newcastle are five clear of danger.
