Soccer - Steve Harper Testimonial - Newcastle United v AC Milan - St James' Park

‘Twas Steve Harper’s glittering 20-year testimonial last night, with a team chock-full of N’cassle legends (Shearer, Ferdinand, Ginola, Peacock) taking on AC Milan’s Glorie boys (Maldini, Baresi, Boban, Vieri) in front of 50,000-odd fans at St James’ Park.

Disappointingly, the game finished 0-0 (gone are the days when testimonials were a bit of fun, it seems) with Milan winning 2-1 in the penalty shootout with Steve Harper missing his kick for the Toon.

Having kept his inclusion hush hush beforehand, Paolo Di Canio started for Milan and, as you can well imagine, the Sunderland manager received a colossal booing as his name was announced during the pre-match line-ups (he responded by blowing kisses to the crowd!), though the Italian did have the last laugh when he scored in the shootout. This coming after being well and truly nobbled by Joey Barton!

  1. That Terry Lewis says:

Disagree Pies, apart from the whole 1D/Gabby knobbling thought Petrovs testimonial Sunday was very watchable. 8 goals, tonnes of faces. Good time had by all.

@That Terry Lewis: To be fair, be judgement is entirely clouded by having sat through Steven Gerrard’s testimonial against Olympiacos a week or two ago. Utterly joyless, not one single smile anywhere on the pitch and the game was dour and regimental like a pre-season friendly no-one wanted to play in.

      Hardly a fitting tribute.

  2. That Terry Lewis says:

Urgh, fairdoes. Would have thought they would have gotten someone bit more sexier than Olympiacos for probably their best player in last 20 years’ testi.

regardless, Evertonian so massive amounts of respect for sitting through that dreck. ;)

  3. Zam says:

Roi Ferdinand’s testimonial was shite too.

  4. Peters says:

Being on Match of the Day hasn’t been kind to Sir Alan of Shearer.. but I’d still have him back in a heartbeat! He probably knows the offside rule

  5. Keith says:

    Tony Hibbert’s was brilliant.
He scored a freekick and somehow Steven Naismith scored a hattrick. Unheard of.

  6. Assu says:

Wow what a line up: Maldini, Boban, Baresi, Ginola – and Phil Mitchell upfront for the toon!

  7. Jarren says:

Goals or not, looks like it was great craic!

Fair play to Di Canio, the man has balls of steel.
