So, Steven Taylor just sent this Tweet to four of his Newcastle teammates – all of whom happen to be black gentlemen: Massadio Haidara, Moussa Sissoko, Papiss Cisse and Vurnon Anita…

Footballers, eh? Aren’t they silly?

For what it’s worth, Haidara responded instantly to the criticism being flung Taylor’s way, telling his followers that the group had previously been joking in the dressing room and that it was all just…you guessed it…banter.

Apparently it was all in response to Haidara ribbing Taylor over a photo of him looking baffled while trying to learn French.

All completely innocuous it would be reasonable to assume, though perhaps a little misguided from Taylor if there were any blame to be apportioned.

Cue, hundreds of Retweets and comments from Twitter users instantly becoming incandescently offended on behalf of the four black players in question and bombarding Taylor with messages of the “this is not okay” variety.

We can almost hear Peter Herbert from the Society of Black Lawyers angrily bashing the speed dial number for Sky Sports News Centre’s into his phone as we speak…

UPDATE: Taylor has just issued an apology…

Case closed. We’re supremely confident that this is the last we’re going to hear of this.

    This is what is wrong with the world today.

    You can bet your mortgage that most of the people who complained weren’t actually offended, but thought that they’d better be, just in case someone was watching.

    In 25 years of travelling I have only met one guy who was sensitive about his colour but he was also only 5’1” so he had a chip anyway.

    We need to turn this clock back before it gets too late.

    Apart from trying to control our every word, Political Correctness (yes – including the concept that any mention of colour is racism) is also killing humour.

    Sit down for 5 minutes and try to tell yourself a joke that doesn’t involve in some way laughing at someone else’s misfortune or making fun of them in some other way.

    Keep thinking. There are 2.

    The Guardian described this tweet as something that “can clearly be construed as racist”. Now, I’m not one for pedantry, but if that’s the case then it must be open to interpretation and any racism is down to the viewer, not the poster.

    @Archie Brand
    I was very offended by the heightism in your comment!

    Achie… what are the two?
