Newcastle United 1-2 Southampton – Premier League – 18th January 2015
Southampton stayed in the top there and just 10 points behind league leaders Chelsea after a hard-fought win at St. James’ Park.
New-signing Eljero Elia was the star man for the Saints, with the Dutch attacker scoring on 14 and 62 minutes. Yoan Gouffran had put the managerless Magpies level on the half-hour mark, when an attempted clearance from Florin Gardos rebounded off the Frenchman into the Saints’ goal. The hosts were buoyed by the equaliser and went close via Gouffran and Ayoze Perez. However, ultimately it was Elia who would strike the final decisive blow as Southampton’s incredible season continues.
Ronald Koeman’s men stay in the hunt for a Champions League berth while the Magpies are now 11th.
