Coming into the game with a dismal goal record for Sunderland (two in 11 games, none in his last six), Jermaine Defoe instantly saw all previously held grievances vanish into the ether when he settled the Northeast derby with an explosive volley mere seconds before the half-time whistle – his one and only shot of the game…
Here’s the GIF version, just in case the video gets stripped down by the Premier League goblins…
The strike was so good that it actually made Defoe well up – though there’s a chance the tears may have had something to do with being stuck out on the wing for the entire game…
Indeed, so bloomin’ outrageous was the volley that Newcastle ‘keeper Tim Krul actually congratulated Defoe in the tunnel at half-time.
Of course, it amounts to very little – just a beaten ‘keeper doffing his cap – though we’re pleased to see that Jamie Carragher and his Sky Sports cronies are desperately trying to foist Krul’s actions as some sort of disgraceful controversy as we speak.
Some things never change, eh?
