“We’re gonna start by working his ribs”

The least surprising news of the day has broken a few minutes ago with the FA announcing that they have bought charges of violent conduct against Newcastle midfielder Joey Barton for the malicious little jab he delivered to the gut of Blackburn’s Morten Gamst Pedersen when the two sides met last night.

Barton has been charged after match referee Mike Jones (who didn’t punish the incident during the game) reviewed video evidence of the misdemeanour at a hearing this afternoon.

The FA statement reads:

“Newcastle United midfielder Joey Barton has today been charged with violent conduct by the FA following an incident in his side’s fixture with Blackburn Rovers on Wednesday, 10th November.

“Barton has until 6pm on Friday 12 November to reply to the charge and under the FA’s fast-track regulations, may admit the charge and accept a standard three-match suspension.”

As you were…

UPDATE: Barton has accepted the FA’s charges and will now be banned for Newcastle’s upcoming games with Fulham, Bolton and Chelsea.

He has also issued the following apology:

“I would like to apologise to [Newcastle manager] Chris Hughton, my team-mates, our fans and of course to Morten Gamst Pedersen and Blackburn.

“I fully accept that I was in the wrong on this occasion and accept the charge that the Football Association have brought against me. I hold my hands up, I reacted badly to the situation on Wednesday night and I deeply regret it.

“I have been working very hard to keep that side of my game under control and I think it has showed in the way I have been able to get on and enjoy my football this season.”

As you were again…

I was just saying I thought he had turned a corner and seemed more sensible. Seemed to be enjoying himself at the toon and had stopped boozing etc etc. How wrong I was…once a prick always a prick

  2. Ben says:

I second what Davy said – I rate him as a player and was pleased to see him settling down (the Hitler salute was ill-advised more than anything more sinister), but what an idiot – why do that on a football field?

  3. PhilandoTorres says:

    To be fair to Joey, he might have been watching this before last night’s game;

  4. JS says:

    @ Ben:
It wasn’t a “Hitler salute”, it was him waving goodbye to the mustache.

@ the rest of you lot:
The punch was no worse than Fabregas’ attempt to remove Ward’s foot from his leg.
Nor was it worse than Fellaini’s attempt to remove Robinson’s pelvis from “that which he holds most dear”.

    The only difference? Joey Barton.

  5. Tinez says:

It was accepted across the board that he did not salute Hitler, Ben, I don’t know where you’ve been for 3 months.

He deserves a 3 match ban, he has apologised unreservedly. Pederson seemed uncaring after the game, and just wanted to move on. Barton will get a few boos at grounds, as per usual, and we’ll move on.

This isn’t as big a circus as the media have made it out to be.

  6. Tinez says:

Completely agree with JS, this article is fundamentally partisan against Joey Barton. His actions are no worse than Huddlestone’s stamp against Bolton for which he got nothing and no point was made or Cattermole’s attempt to end Modric’s career on Tuesday, to which no attention was paid.

    Stop jumping on the bandwagon.

  7. Mr. Angry says:

pay more attention to what’s happening anywhere else in the EPL… stop pointing the finger at joey barton…

  8. Chris says:

For Gods sake, I’m as much of a Newcastle fan as anybody else, but just because he is our player doesn’t stop him being a complete wanker. I know Pederson is a git, and they spent most of the match diving and being arseholes such is typical Allardyce management, but turning around and punching somebody in the chest is not the same as a bad tackle as JS laughably suggested above.
I love Barton when he’s putting balls in for Carroll and playing well, but it’s not “Anti-Newcastle” or “Southern-Bias” for people to report on a violent arsehole punching a player who had done little to provoke it. Take off the blinkers for once lads.

  9. Kevin Barry says:

Forget about a 3 game ban, put him in the ring with Manny Pacquiao, let him receive a good thrashing, that’ll teach him

Sorry to post what I posted on another forum, but I said it so well, I’ll say it again:

“Are y’all facking kidding me?? Joey Barton gets a punishment for THAT little love tap??

Not that he shouldn’t have pulled that punch, but…come on man, THAT was hardly worth the effort. Pedersen should get some kind of Academy Award for the FLOP there. ((Watch the video a few more times than you already have and you’ll realize that Pedersen pretty much flopped for effect, since that’s what soccer boys do trying to sell the call))

If that had happened on the street, Pedersen would have laughed at and been humiliated for being a sissy-girl, or a nancy-boy. Or both,

This love tap was nothing to write home to mum about.

Give Joey a fine and/or a suspension for 3 and let it go at that. To make a Joey back into a criminal for this is facetious. I’ve seen much worse in the NFL in the States. My local hero, NIck Collins of the4 Green Bay Packers was fined $50,000 (( that’s £32,000 for those of you in Newcastle, Manchester, or Sunderland who are keeping score at home)) for a helmet to helmet hit on Dallas Cowboys wide-reciever Roy Williams…a hit that was actually far more egregious-looking than this little Barton vs. Pedersen thrilla.

Much about about nothing. But it’s Joey Barton, so……*flail*”

  12. Mr Man says:

    @Fat Nakago

What the hell are you talking NFL for? Two completeley different sports with different physical attributes. Trust a septic to bang on about soccer and what not…NFL is not as ‘hard’ as you make out, stick those players in a Rugby short without pads and see how ‘eregious-looking’ their hits are then.

  13. Davy says:

No matter what you think, you know you cant do that on a football field. He is a professional and knows that, Pederson tapped shoulders with him and to me looked like he was turning round to apologise and Barton just goes radge. I agree more will be made of it coz it is Barton but who’s fault is that? I think he has received the right punishment and lets move on but for fucks sake no matter what your view point is about it he is a dick…….and i’m a toon fan and still want him to play and play well but wouldnt wanna go for a pint with him….EVER

  14. Mind Gamer says:

This prick shouldn’t be allowed to play professional football! He’s a thug and a bully as well as a shit-house!

  15. he6rt6gr6m says:

    Photoshop fail.

But yes, Barton should get a life-time ban.

  16. Tony H says:

Barton – Been doing awesome recently, pleased for him. Seems to be trying hard. Other players going after him, Wolves were an example of that. Kept his cool.

Barton punch, wrong completely wrong. Deserves the ban.

MGP made a massive deal of it though, went to the ground got medical attention… made a huge meal of it. No respect for that in my eyes.
