Hull City are to be renamed “Hull Tigers” and drop the “A.F.C” from their club name for the 2013/14 Premier League season after their owners deemed the club’s original name to be ‘too common’.

Egyptian owners Assem and Ehab Allam have confirmed that they intend to rebrand the club to put more emphasis on the whole “Tigers” aspect – in much the same way as Cardiff owner Vincent Tan moulded his team’s identity from Bluebirds to Red Dragons to better pique the interest of the potentially lucrative Eastern market.

Any road up, Assem Allam regaled the Hull Daily Mail with the machinations of his masterplan:

“Hull City is irrelevant. My dislike for the work ‘City’ is because it is common. City is also associated with Leicester, Bristol, Manchester and many other clubs.

“In the commercial world, the shorter the name, the better. The more it can spread quickly. It is about identity. City is a lousy identity. Hull City Association Football Club is so long.”

Perhaps that means they’ll go back to playing in their exquisitely beautiful “tiger stripe” kit from the 1992/93 season?

We can but hope.

I’m not sure it’s the “City” part that makes Hull City too common…

  2. Manolo Garnix says:

I think I underlined it quite a few times but as a fan I really hate this aspect of modern football. Don’t dare to change my teams crest, colours or name. these are the basic elements of my love for the club. I’m not spending a shit load of money every year to see my team because I am emotionally attached to the players, the manager or even the owner. THey come, they go, I accept it. But therefore please have the respect to not change the few symbols that aren’t attached to a certain person.

  3. Joe says:

Maybe I’m not saying it right, but how much shorter is ‘Hull Tigers’ from ‘Hull City’?
I think Fulham should follow the same trend and rename themselves Fulham Cottagers. Mind, the stadium will look like Madame Taussauds by the time they’ve added a George Michael statue.

    What a beautiful, beautiful shirt

  5. Doctor's Your Uncle says:

They have a name for foreigners who try to do things like this in the name of “branding” and “marketing”. It rhymes with “rocking shunts”.

  6. Mokum says:

Quickly becoming the 51st state, including dumb tacky sports ‘franchise’ names and said franchises being run by people who don’t care about anything but profit.

  7. dc says:

In fairness, the new rebranded NYC subways show a map of the premier league teams and the boroughs they “represent”– I’ll have you know Hull City claimed the entirety of Harlem

  8. wolfinho says:

Yeah, because “Tigers” are relevant. There are more fat, slow tigers in zoos than fearsome predator tigers in the wild. Why not the Hull Pandas, or, more to the point, the Hull Dodos?

And when is a team going to get the balls to call their team the “Cancer Viruses”? The Hull Cancer Viruses. I would be scared to play against that outfit.

  9. Calm Arsenal Man says:

Mokum yes as an american “escapist” type of person, I am quickly debating watching south american football only bc the premier league is becomming more and more reminiscent of what I know all too well. If I had a local team here i’d support it too, but i dont, so i dont. No doubt if we had a local team it would be have a gimmicky nickname to draw in fans.

  10. […] win the title and Torres will inevitably fold like a lawn chair.  But either way the Hull Tigers (NOT HULL CITY AFC, ALRIGHT? CAUSE THAT SOUNDS STUPID!) won’t be able to hang and Chelsea put this away with ease. […]
