The following ten coaches are in contention for the FIFA World Coach of the Year for Men’s Football 2014:

Pep Guardiola (Bayern Munich)
Jurgen Klinsmann (USA)
Joachim Loew (Germany)
Jose Mourinho (Chelsea)
Manuel Pellegrini (Manchester City)
Alejandro Sabella (Argentina)
Diego Simeone (Atletico Madrid)
Louis van Gaal (Netherlands/Manchester United)

The winners of all of the awards will be revealed at the FIFA Ballon d’Or gala at the Zurich Kongresshaus on 12 January 2015, along with all the other little bits and bobs Sepp and his cronies dole out.

Interestingly enough, there are rumours that Luis Suarez hasn’t made the shortlist due to FIFA’s “overall behaviour on and off pitch” clause – not that we’re remotely surprised.

Anyway, you can probably go ahead and stick a shiny groat on Ronaldo picking up back-to-back Ballons, while we’re guessing Diego Simeone will be going home with the coaches award.

What say you, Pies fans?

Seems a ridiculous clause seeing as how behavior on and off the pitch holds no bearing on raw talent and this is the “Fifa world player of the year” award. Not having Suarez at least on the list undermines the sport as a whole seeing as how he was the top scorer in Europe last season. However regardless if Suarez was on the ballot Ronaldo is the obvious choice to win.

  2. adhikapp says:

Suarez not shortlisted because of the clause is stupid but unsurprising really, Wasn’t going to win it anyway. Ronaldo and Messi are the obvious frontrunners and probably a few of the German players could make the top 3. But only 23 players? Don’t the usually make like 30?

  3. Seanbemand1@gmail.com says:

Premier league players?! Nice to see some names in there for a change, let’s go neur.

  4. Rob says:

    Why is Mourinho on there?
    His team came third.

  5. Jamie says:

Suarez not shortlisted due to his behavior.

Meanwhile Messi has that little tax avoidance trial to deal with and is perfectly fine to put on the list.

    K.

  6. SG says:

I’m not a Chelsea fan by any means, but I thought Courtois was magnificent for Atletico last season. You can guarantee it will be Ronaldo because of the Champions League win for Real.

  7. Nuno says:

I think basically because he got to the Champions League semi finals (all four CL semi finalist coaches there, and three World Cup semi finalists – no Brazil for obvious reasons)

  8. Captain Obvious says:

From eight teams. Ridiculous. I hope Sepp Blatter is forced to pass a kidney stone every week.

    a big one

  9. Mario says:

This award is for the calendar year of 2014. So far in 2014 Suarez played zero CL or EL games. In the first half of 2014 at Liverpool he did well in domestic EPL games however had no cup games and no titles. In the second half of 2014 he was a complete joke at the world cup by biting a player and very likely killing his nations world cup hopes. The rest of 2014 he spent sitting on suspension. His 2013/2014 season was outstanding with Liverpool but when you only look at the year of 2014 which this award is based on, he doesn’t belong on the short list.

At the end of the day it’s a pointless debate since Ronaldo has broke all sorts of records and really had no competition this season. The only other player that could maybe challenge him will be a German player for their work at the world cup but that would still be a shock.

As for manager I think it’s between Simeone and Loew.

I think Ronaldo has done very well for himself, grown up as a player and an individual, seems like his diving days are over as are his childish tantrums. He helped Portugal to qualify for the world cup,won the CL and is a mean scoring machine.
