Here’s a lovely little cockle-warmer coming courtesy of Leicester City, who laid on a special VIP day for a young fan by the name of Charlie who has been going through some incredibly tough times of late.

Tragically, Charlie’s mum passed away recently and, in a desperate attempt to give his grieving nephew something to smile about, supporter Rob Keyworth contacted the club.

Rob asked whether it would be okay if nine-year-old Charlie could visit to look at some memorabilia belonging to his great-uncle Ken Keyworth, who scored shed loads of goals for Leicester in the early 1960s.

However, the club went one better and wasted no time in rolling out the red carpet to give Charlie a full tour of the premises…

Leicester City. Proper football club.

As I’ve mentioned in the past, my uncle played for Leicester in the 60s and was one of their greatest players (20 league goals in a season in Div1, 6 minute hat trick v Man U, FA cup final goal etc).

And over the past 6/7 months my nephew, Charlie, has become a Leicester City fan.

My brother asked Charlie what he’d like to do on Saturday and his response was go to Leicester to the club shop. I heard that on Saturday morning NZ time and thought I’d contact Leicester to see if there was any way they could make a bit of a fuss over Charlie.

I knew it would be difficult because obviously it’s a Saturday.

So I emailed pretty much all of the email addresses on their website and tweeted them in the vain hope of getting a response.

I was delighted to receive a couple of responses from Sales and Help to say that they wouldn’t be able to do anything today but they’ve forwarded to the club historian who would love to meet Charlie and show some of his great uncle’s memorabilia to him.

Which I thought was lovely and hoped something like that could be arranged.

I woke up this morning to a dozen photos of Charlie in the stadium, in the changing rooms, on the pitch etc.

I don’t know any of the details but basically with no notice Leicester City have rolled out the red carpet for a nine year old boy who has just lost his Mum.

Thank you Leicester. Thank you.

Smashing. Well played that football club.
