Johan Cruyff has passed away today at the age of 68, just five months after he was diagnosed with lung cancer.

“I’ve had to two addictions in my life: smoking and playing football,” he once mused.

“Football has given me everything, whilst smoking almost took it all away”.

Almost no more. Don’t smoke, kids. It’ll kill you, no matter who you are.

We’re struggling to put any cogent words together here. Cruyff was an idol. An icon. Flaxen haired and snake-hipped. Oranje. Slim, lithe. Beautiful. Eternal.

Every facet of modern football owes him a debt of gratitude forever.

This is how we’ll always remember him.

No Cruyff, no beautiful game. In fact no football as we know today. I saw him play once, for Holland against Northern Ireland in 1977 at Windsor Park in a World Cup qualifier, with George Best turning out for the hosts. They pitted their not iconsiderable football wits against each other in midfield and it was an absolute joy and privilege to watch. How special that game – which the Dutch won 1-0 – has now become for me. RIP Johan…but I’m sure Bestie will still have you in his back pocket up there just like he did on that sunny afternoon in Belfast all those years ago…

Cruyff has been the most influential man in football for the past 40 years. We all have players that make us fall in love with the game and Cruyff is one of those. I would have paid the asking price of any Prem season ticket to watch him boot balls into an empty net. Classy player and a character too. Both of which are rapidly disappearing in the modern game. A unique player and person that will be missed and remembered forever.

A true gentleman and a true sportsman.

    Fuck smoking.
