UEFA have released their list of 40 nominees for the 2016 Team of the Season, with Wales rewarded for their super Euro 2016 campaign by snaffling three inclusions, courtesy of Joe Allen, Gareth Bale and Aaron Ramsey.

England’s dismal failure in the competition means that they miss out completely on the list, although the exclusion of Leicester City hitman Jamie Vardy is a bit of a surprise after his goals fired the Foxes to an unlikely Premier League title.

The Premier League is well represented with Vardy’s 2015/16 team-mates N’Golo Kanté and Riyad Mahrez both listed.

Not surprisingly, European Champions Portugal are well represented via goalkeeper Rui Patricio, Raphael Guerreiro, Pepe and, of course, Cristiano Ronaldo.

As for notable exclusions, along with Vardy, Arsenal’s Mesut Ozil misses out after an assist-packed campaign in 2015/16.
