Italian newspaper Tuttosport have belched forth the 25 names included on their shortlist for the 2017 Golden Boy award, given to the best footballer in Europe under the age of 21.

The award has become increasingly prestigious over the past decade or so, with previous winners including Wayne Rooney, Raheem Sterling, Cesc Fabregas, Paul Pogba, Anthony Martial, Isco, Mario Balotelli, Lionel Messi, Sergio Aguero and, last year, Renato Sanches.

Six English players are included on the 2017 quite-long-shortlist: Marcus Rashford, Dominic Calvert-Lewin, Joe Gomez, Reece Oxford, Dominic Solanke and Kyle Walker-Peters; while one further non-English Premier League player also makes the cut in the shape of Gabriel Jesus.

Elsewhere on the list are nailed-on winner Kylian Mbappe, as well as fellow €100million-plus club member Ousmane Dembele, newly of Barcelona.

    Joe Gomez? Seriously?

    • Chris Wright says:

The Golden Boy poll takes into account all performances across a calendar year (Sep-Sep, as far as we know) during which time Gomez made roughly 10 senior appearances.

Honestly, we have no idea why he is included either.
