In a rather incredible bit of bad timing, Sutton United were forced to use defender Simon Downer as a makeshift goalkeeper during their clash with Torquay on Saturday, after their regular ‘keeper Ross Warner was forced off with injury.

Without their usual reserve goalkeeper, infamous pie-eater Wayne Shaw, poor old Sutton had no back-up goalie on the bench.

However, the non-league side still managed to win the game 3-2.

Shaw was sacked by Sutton due to his now infamous demolishing of a pie during the high-profile FA Cup fifth round clash with Arsenal.

The 45-year-old is currently under investigation by both the FA and Gambling Commission for the incident, which came after Sun Bets had offered 8-1 odds on the chunky glovesman tucking into a pie during the cup clash.

Still, shorn of both first-choice Ross Worner on 16 minutes and the disgraced Shaw, Sutton still managed to overcome Torquay, with 35-year-old defender Downer conceding just once as the U’s registered their first victory in five National League games.
