The PFA have this morning yodeled their ‘Player of the Year’ and ‘Young Player of the Year’ award nominations for the season of our lord 2012/13 from atop their ivory tower and the shortlists are as follows:

Player of the Year…

Gareth Bale
Michael Carrick
Eden Hazard
Juan Mata
Luis Suarez
Robin van Persie

Young Player of the Year…

Gareth Bale
Christian Benteke
Eden Hazard
Romelu Lukaku
Danny Welbeck
Jack Wilshere

The ‘Player of the Year’ award isn’t quite as cut-and-dry, but we may as well congratulate Mr Bale on his ‘Young Player’ win right here and now.

While Lukaku and Benteke hit the ground running at new clubs, Bale has eclipsed them both throughout the entire season. Wilshere, Welbeck and Hazard have been far too patchy for one reason or another. Surely a nod for Michu would have been more deserving?

As for the senior award, we’re fairly sure RVP’s going to nab it.

As Jamie Redknapp so succinctly put it a couple of months ago, there’s only one thing that’s going to stop Luis Suarez being voted the PFA Player of the Year and that’s his fellow professionals, who just so happen to be the ones voting for it.

Who’s you’re money going on Pies fans?

Has Wilshere really done anything this season? I’d have given his place to one of the great young keepers we’ve had this season, like De Gea…

  2. marajonna says:

Hazard can count himself lucky to be on either of those lists, great potential but it doesn’t seem to me as if he’s done too much this season. A bale double for me.

  3. Nuno says:

Really? Michu turned 27 a month ago, what’s your limit on “young”? Maybe he could be there in place of Carrick or Hazard. Agree with your “probable winners” though.

  4. Dave says:

I agree with Mr Redknapp why would a fellow pro cast their vote on someone who has cheated dived and faked all season. Shame really as he does probably deserve to be player of the year.

  5. Chris says:

@Nuno: I’m officially an idiot. I’ve been labouring under the illusion that he was an “old-looking” 21/22-year-old all season! What a bloody schmuck.

  6. Anonymous says:

RVP for me, best player in the best team. Bale’s been untouchable for the last three or so months, but RVP’s been up there all season.

To be fair, Michu is still probably a better shout for the senior shortlist than Hazard. Nothing against Hazard, but he’s not been world-class this season.

@Dave, “why would a fellow pro cast their vote on someone who has cheated dived and faked all season.”

Well it’s probably gonna be between Suarez and Bale so it’s fairly like for like, no?

I’m sorry Carrick?! In the top 6 best players in the Premier League this season?!
Van Persie will win it, would be nice to see Suarez deservedly get it. Also Lukaku or Benteke for the young ‘un one would be lovely..
    Carrick?!

    Carrick?!

  11. Diamanti says:

How is Michael Carrick even considered to be on this list?! The top 6 players in the premier league this season?! It should be Suarez but Van Persie will win it

  12. Bruno says:

I vote for Tiago Bebe. He’s not playing in England but he’s a genius and deserves to win it.

  13. foxycunningham says:

It’s gotta be Mata for me – he’s been completely dedicated all season, he’s played more games than most other players in the league and has performed well in every one. A true team player and a genuine good guy. Suarez hasn’t got a chance in hell – quality player but he p*sses people off.

  14. EddieH says:

    Where’s Jussi?!

  15. SZY says:

Carrick is probably the most calm and intelligent midfielder in PL, this season he has been outstanding for United. He wont win any prizes but just to get to the shortlist shows that you don’t need to be a goal scorer to be considered a good footballer.

But why should RVP win? De Gea, Carrick, Evans, Jones, Rafael, they’ve all performed better than RVP – and thats only United, how is it possible that RVP with a mediocre season and a remarkable goal drought is considered to the be best in the league?

Michu, Fellaini, Yaya, Lambert, Cazorla, Verthongen, at least half of those names should be on the shortlist.

  16. Russell says:

RVP with a 10 game goal draught? no thanks

  17. Sjakie Meulemans says:

Carrick deserves bags of credit, you bunch of Americans. It’s not just the spectacular that counts in football.

  18. STFC says:

I think it has to be suarez for consistency. If you reversed Bale’s season he would be in the same boat as RvP, was up to very little before december. Also doesn’t turn up to a lot of games since then. Would love Mata to get it, such a top bloke and a great footballer, but the British press are too busy blowing hot air up Bale’s arse.

  19. Jamie says:

    Senior: Bale
    Young: Benteke

  20. Rob says:

Dave, “I agree with Mr Redknapp why would a fellow pro cast their vote on someone who has cheated dived and faked all season. Shame really as he does probably deserve to be player of the year.”
so you don’t think that Bale should win it then? booked for diving 5 times this season!

  21. Jay says:

Leighton Baines was deserving of a nod.

Suarez should win it in terms of the football he’s produced but being a bit of an all=round tosser will probably hinder him. Can make a good case for Mata, RVP and Bale. Tight field this year, unlike last year

  22. p says:

since mata isn’t on the first list i gotta go with van persie

as far as young player, it really ought to be hazard.

  23. p says:

oh why oh why did i not read mata’s name right there… i’m too high or something. anyway, i’d pick him, because though united have dominated the league, its been by such a committee.

  24. TravisKOP says:

suarez deserves the award but will lose out to rvp. LAWLZ god only knows how carrick got on this list, hes basically leon osman but plays for utd.

  25. mardybum says:

no ben davies & no michu SHOCKING

  26. Degs says:

Suarez has been the best player this year, but unfortunately being the best player isn’t the criteria for winning this award – despite it’s name.
Because of how stupidly early it’s voted for, it’ll probably go to van Persie for his decent form up to Christmas.

  27. Cheets says:

And the mindless Carrick bashing by people who haven’t even watched him goes on. He’ll forever be an ‘average’ player no matter how fucking brilliant he is.
