Safe to say that there’s not really any love lost when it comes to the cross-Ruhr rivalry between Schalke 04 and Borussia Dortmund, though the latest quest to secure local bragging rights is definitely more “good-natured ribbing” than “crucified swine”.

As is the case every year, the town of Dortmund opened their world famous Christmas market over the weekend, with tourists from all over flocking to gawp at the huge, 45-metre Christmas tree that dominates the market square.

However, thanks to a crew of mischievous Schalke-supporting scaffolders, the grand unveiling of this year’s Dortmund monster tree will surely go down in infamy.

Indeed, planted at the very summit, was a flag bearing a familiar blue and white logo…

According to Der Westen newspaper, the offending flag was taken down just minutes after it was spotted, but thankfully somebody in the crowd had a camera phone on hand to preserve the image forever.

Might impressive dedication to the banter cause.
