On this evidence, there’s a lot to be said for the maligned third-place playoff. Both Uruguay and Germany wanted to win, showed no inhibition, and so played arguably the most entertaining and open match of the tournament. All of which was in stark contrast to Sunday’s cynical final.

The Germans deserved to win, just about, and in retrospect I’d have liked them to win the whole thing, as they were overall the best team to watch, apart from when they ran into Spain – I was glad Sami Khedira got a goal too; fully deserved for the man who replaced Michael Ballack.

Uruguay were terrific too, especially Diego Forlan, who won the Golden Ball for the best player in the tournament. The right decision, in my book.
